Dental & Tooth Sealants in Albuquerque
Brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing once a day will help remove food debris and plaque that causes tooth decay. But at-home brushing and professional teeth cleanings are not the only ways to prevent cavities. The family dentists at Grant Davis Gribble Dental can also help you prevent tooth decay with dental sealants.
Understanding Dental Sealants
Dental sealants are plastic coatings that fill in the crevices and grooves of teeth (usually molars). The coating acts as a protective barrier between your tooth enamel and decay-causing bacteria. The coating is so thin so that your teeth still have uneven surfaces to help you grind up food while chewing.
Unlike tooth fillings that are applied to a cavity to seal off an area where decay has been removed, dental sealants can only be applied as a preventative treatment to teeth that have no decay or previous cavity fillings.
Dental Sealant Procedure
Dental sealants are an excellent example of how preventative dental care can be less painful. In order to treat a cavity, decay must be removed, and that often requires the area around the affected tooth to be numbed before the filling can be applied.
Dental sealants, on the other hand, do not require any numbing or drilling. The tooth is simply cleaned, prepped with a special gel that helps the dental sealant adhere to your enamel and then the actual sealant is painted onto your tooth. We use a special light to harden the dental sealant.
